B8. You covered a lot on this hand, but would you also give the expert bidding after a start of p 1d p 1s 3c? You started to at 57:53, but that sequence wasn't finished - so many things to talk about. Thanks.
North would bid 3♥ (natural and game forcing), south would cuebid 4♣ to show a really good hand with a heart fit. At that point north would probably jump to 6♣ exclusion Blackwood which I haven't taught but thats a perfect spot for it. It asks partner for keycards outside of the club suit. 6♥ response would show 1 keycard and north would pass.
Board 2, as E & W my new partner and I were defending 2SNXX, due to a misunderstanding with the opponents. My partner at one point led the KD from AKJ8. The K held. I thought declarer probably thought she was leading from KQ and had the AJx and was hoping she would continue playing the Q. I would have expected my partner to lead the A from AKJ8 in a suit contract. Top of touching honors. She disagreed. She said I should have known she had the A because the K held. We have not played together in a match for points so we haven't ironed out our methods yet. We'd love your input on the correct lead from AKJ8 in a suit contract. It was not the opening lead, if that matters. Thanks.
Your partner is correct that in the middle of the hand it is a good idea to play king from ace king. This situation doesn't come up very often but you should definitely be aware of the possibility that your partner may lead king from ace king in the middle of the hand. I sometimes even forget and lead the ace from ace king in the middle of the hand. There is a reason for it but I can't think of it off the top of my head. When the king holds thats a good indication that is whats going on.
I have educated myself since I posted this after identifying this gap in my knowledge. The reason you lead the king after the first trick if you have AK according to Eddie Kantar is because sometimes you don't have the A and the K and you need to be able to lead the ace and not promise the K. Thanks for doing these games and video lessons. I thoroughly enjoy them. I had to cancel today due to a family emergency, but I plan to be back playing next week.
B4 What would you lead from the East hand against 6NT? B9 How should East advance if North passes over West's 1♥? 1♠, 1NT, or 2♣? B10 What would 3NT by South mean after 1NT-2♣-2♥-3♠? I think it is spade control.
Board 4: Knowing partner is at least 4-4-3-x (they didnt find a fit in a major, and unlikely to have an 8 card diamond fit) means a club lead is so unlikely to be the right thing to do. I think I would lead a passive diamond. Board 9, I would bid 1♠, but 1NT is reasonable too. Board 10 If you dont play "Base AKA Goldman", then yes it would be a good idea to play 3NT as a spade control. In reality if you are capable of remembering and understanding 3NT as a spade control, you are better off playing Baze.
B10. How would you bid using Baze.. i'm thinking it starts with 4C with balanced hand and 2 quick spade losers. Can you finish the bidding for me, please.
I would drive to slam with the south hand over 4♣. Even with 15 I just think this particular 15 is more like 17. So 4C-4N keycard-3 or 0 - 6H.
Learned offline, so sharing here for everyone... Why is leading a doubleton on board 6 better than low-from-CKxxx? Gavin clarified this choice depends on whether the auction indicates URGENCY (to build the CK trick before it goes away). Gavin's full reply: "It would totally depend on the hand for whether I would lead a doubleton or kxxx. One isn’t better than the other “in general”. It entirely depends on if it’s an active or passive lead situation. At matchpoints I don’t like leading from honors (or honor doubletons) unless the auction sounds like there is urgency." Having been burned a few times lately underleading Kxxx or Qxxx, I'm game to adopt this ;-)
