On board 6, after (1D) 1NT (2D) would 2NT by N be lebensohl asking partner to bid 3C ? Probably need a sixth club to do this but wondering if that would be the meaning of the bid in this spot.
In this situation, just completely ignore opener's bid, and play whatever you would play after a 1NT opening and responder's bid showing whatever they showed. That could easily be lebensohl.
On board 5, a little confused about when support doubles should be on. I understood the concept of the support doubles should as showing 3 card support when partner has shown 4+ so you’re looking for an 8 card fit but not sure you have one. I would not have expected they were on here when partner shows 5. Also, I’ve heard you say previously that support doubles are not on over partners negative double when that could be 5 say after 1D (1S) X. Don’t really understand the logic here. On this hand, if you were playing that X was 4+ and 1S was 0-3 spades (something I’ve seen some experts do in competition) would support doubles apply ?
It's a fair question without a clear answer. But on this auction, there isn't a much better use for double anyway. So we just keep our rule consistent. On the negative double auction, responder only has 5+ hearts if they are weak, so the issues are a little different. And if opener doubles to show extra values, responder will bid their 5+ hearts anyway.
On board 2, if W does compete to 3D as you mentioned, should either N or S take another call ? I tried X as south meaning it as short diamonds and good hand for my initial 2C bid. Partner passed and 2 down for +300 was a good score but I guess it’s risky and could have worked out poorly. Would you say that was reasonable or was I anti-percentage and just got lucky ?
I like your double, competing seems like a good idea, and if partner is 2-2 in the majors (and didn't pass 2♣) they probably have some diamonds to pass the double with.
Hi Gavin, on board 1, you say that 1NT-2D-2H-2S shows 5-5 invitational. I had thought this showed invitational with 5 hearts and 4 spades - how do you show the 5-4 invitational this way around? I know with 5 spades invitational, with or without 4 hearts, you go via stayman and rebid 2S but what about 5-4 the other way ?
I don't worry too much about 5-4 or 4-5 invitational. Something has to be lost, and even though 5-5 is less common, it's more important to show.
