Bd 9. If N opens 1nt, after West bids 3 spades, could you comment on whether East should bid 4s? Thanks.

Josh DonnTeacherFeb 21, 2025

West should overcall 2β™  not 3β™ . Vulnerable balancing 3β™  after 1NT shows a good hand. I would raise that to 4β™  with the east hand.

On board 1, if a pair were playing non-serious 3NT, what would be the difference for west between bidding 3S vs. bidding 3NT on their third bid? (The auction at that point would be: 1S-2D-2H-2S-3H)

Gavin WolpertTeacherApr 9, 2023edited

I would typically just bid 3 of the major to let partner give their serious or non serious vote. Warren and I have a rule in spots like this, "the less you bid the more you have", so 3NT for us would say I am close to fast arrival but a little too good.

On board 2, if you AJ of clubs were the AJ of hearts would you be strong enough to invite using 2-way NMF?

Gavin WolpertTeacherMar 29, 2023edited

I would pretty much never invite with a 5-4 10 count opposite a 12-14 1NT rebid. I would not invite with AJxx of hearts. We might miss a game but you will also get to lots of 23-24 point games that have no chance. 5-5 is a totally different story.

On board 5 bid i was intrigued by that 2β™  "impossible-like" balancing bid, because my partner actually bid this, wanting to bid and knowing that she can't X. I know the formal Impossible2β™  convention is 1β™₯-1N-1m-2β™  showing a max limit raise for Opener's minor. So I'm seeking to understand exactly what is the necessary setup for this impossible version. I can so far surmise that: 1. Opp must have evidenced it's content to pass out below 2β™ , so this must be a *balancing* bid. 2. It must by a passed hand that DID have the chance to overcall 1β™  but chose NOT to. 3. It must only apply if Opp bid only one suit (since if they bid two, we can double for takeout to the other two). Assuming we don't play Equal Level Conversion, would this bid still be on if Opp was in a *minor*? (if yes, this impossible-"like" 2β™  would show spades and the longer other minor)?

When we don't overcall at our first opportunity at the 1 level, and then suddenly come to life overcalling at the 2 level on our next turn. This should raise alarm bells. I am always thinking about partner's range. The first thing that comes to mind is, "why didn't partner overcall the first time". "There is no hand that is strong enough to overcall at the 2 level that wasnt strong enough to overcall at the 1 level". I guess it could work after 1D-1N-2D all by them but I've never seen it. We don't usually have 5 clubs in this spot (and we sometiems could have overcalled directly over 1D). Its just after 1H-1N-2H really.

Hello Gavin. Board 4. I am not sure I understand why North's second bid of 3C is not forcing. Is it because N/S are the overcalling side. I am perhaps confused in that usually a new suit at the 3 level is game forcing, certainly over a 2NT limit bid. Thank you for all your input - so valuable.

Gavin WolpertTeacherMar 29, 2023

We aren't in a game force and we are pulling away from NT into a minor suit. If the overcaller had a game forcing 5-5 they would have bid michaels. If they are 5-4 they would just raise to 3NT. It is quite common over an invitational 2NT bid that we retreat to sign of in a second suit at the 3 level. What is unique about this situation is that its a new suit. Try to picture a strong hand that would want to bid 3C. It doesn't exist.

On board 1, since best defense is to hold up on the diamond ruff with the last spade is it better for declarer to start by just ducking a spade around to keep more control later? That's if spades are 3-2, then I think that assures making five.

Gavin WolpertTeacherMar 26, 2023edited

You cant make 5 unless you get a heart ruff. If you duck a spade first then it makes it even harder to get a heart ruff. They could legitimately just win the trump and play trumps back to achieve the same result. I think the best way to make 5 is to win the opening lead and play a heart. Then after ruffing a heart you duck a spade while you still have a trump in dummy to protect against the opponents having heart tricks. Interestingly the best defense if declarer plays a heart at trick 2 is to play a diamond to start to severe declarer's communication. A very difficult play to visualize, although its acheivable for south because they learn at trick 1 that declarer has a singleton ace of clubs

Yes, heart at trick two and hope they don't find the diamond shift since you need to let them in twice. If they return a spade, which looks like a good play to kill the dummy ruffs, you can duck and win the next spade, ruff a heart, and take control from there--come to hand, pull last trump, etc. If the spades go 4-1 the hand gets really tough!

Board 8 I was West. Pd and I play Flannery so three passes to South who opened 1β™ . Can West overcall 2♦ now given that game is out of picture for us and the colors are good? (I heard you that it is not a 2♦ overcall unpassed.)

Gavin WolpertTeacherMar 22, 2023

Its fine. I don't have a ton of experience in this spot because I don't play Flannery so I never have these normal weak two bids as a passed hand.

Is your 2way NMF different from 2way checkback? If so, how so? Thanks

Gavin WolpertTeacherMar 22, 2023

I don't know what 2way checkback is. The 2 way new minor forcing I teach is the one that is universally played by experts. 2C forces partner to bid 2D to then show an invitational hand somewhere. 2D sets a game force. There is a lot more to it, but that should tell you if it's different from "2 way checkback".
