Josh, thanks for clarifying - I didn't realize the pass was forcing. I know I was light to redouble, but (not knowing that W had 7 Hs), I figured N had Ss for the double, and wanted W to bid again - and gave myself "extra" points for 5-5 minors . I guess I need a class on forcing passes . . .
It's no worries. For the redouble when an opening bid is doubled, you don't really want to stretch it with distributional points, this one is high card points only. You mainly redouble to catch the opponents, which your side needs significant strength to do effectively.
On Board 8, I was E. The bidding was: W opened 1H, N doubled, I redoubled, S bid 1 S, and Lia PASSED!! I thought my bid said that I had points but no support for Hs . . . where did I go wrong?
You are correct. That is what your redouble means. Probably a couple more points than you hold. I believe West should rebid game or make a GF bid with this hand. But maybe they feel they don't have enough and are waiting for you to bid. The auction is forcing to at least 2H if you don't double for penalty, so you can't Pass 1S.
Gavin didn't comment about XX but even if it was an overbid, that is all the more reason for W to bid, and I agree with Gavin that W should have bid 4H.
West could have rebid some amount of hearts, but the pass is forcing. When you redouble, if the opponents make a simple (non-jump) response to the double, you are promising you will bid again. Traditionally, an auction like 1♥ X XX 1♠, opener bids immediately when weak in high cards, passes then bids again with a stronger hand. And your redouble is supposed to be 10+ points. You were a little light :)
