Hi Everybody,
Thanks for playing in the Wolpert Bridge Duplicate Game. I hope you enjoyed the session. This Tuesday game was geared towards advanced students, and all content was based on lessons in 'Master Series' series.
One of the goals of these duplicate games is for you to meet each other and maybe find other people to practice with.
Another goal of these duplicate games is to find a way for you to continue learning and practicing what you have learned in my lessons. That was one of the best ways I learned bridge, playing deals and then going over them afterwards. So, if you have any questions about the hands you have played in these games, use the Q&A section below the video to ask your questions.
When asking a question, please reference the deal number. You can also go to BBO, and chose the deal you have played, and from the menu choose 'Export', 'Handviewer link', and copy the link and paste it in the comments together with your question.
Next week, we will have a BBO game on Tuesday and Friday again but this time the post-game review will be a live session on Zoom where you can ask your questions.

B2. You would bid 2N as opener with only 1 card in responder's suit? rather than just rebid 3D
2NT basically shows 1-4-5-3. That is my default bid with that shape and a stopper in the 4th suit. Expressing the stopper is so important in this auction. We aren't often 2-4-5-2 with a club stopper when we reverse. This is usually a 2NT rebid (or 1NT opener).
B1 north doesn’t quite have rule of 20 and spread out honors. Is this an open?
I wouldn't open. You're creating a ton of unwanted variance by opening a hand that the field won't open. It also will just get you too high too often.
Bd 8, is 5-4 in the minors a requirement for your 3 heart bid showing 3 spades and 1 heart, or could you have 6/3 in the minors? With good values in the 6/3 minors, would you consider bidding 3NT instead of 3H ?
When I have a game force with a singleton and 6+ of my minor, I would always transfer to my minor and bid my singleton. Eg. 1N 2N-3D-3S shows 6 diamonds and short spades. This is because we always use stayman with 4 spades and 6D: Eg. 1N 2C-2H-3D shows 5+ Diamonds 4+ Spades and a game force. Transferring to a minor and showing shortness is the way to avoid 3NT on hands similar to board 8 that don't qualify for the 31/54 bids. This is the standard way to play when you play 4 way transfers, although some teachers stop short of explaining the follow ups because its a little complex and understandably difficult to comprehend for intermediate players.
Loved playing in the game and hearing your highlight analysis on a few of the hands, thank you! Bd 10 we got to 3S going down 1 using Bergen. 1) would you open 1S with east hand? 2). Thoughts on Bergen, do you play it? Pam
I like Bergen. I think playing in 3♠ is unavoidable on this hand once you open 1♠ (which I would do, although it's an ugly 11 count that tests my rule of opening all 11 point hands with a 5 card major). I would treat the west hand as a limit raise (11 because of my doubleton) so even if I wasn't playing bergen I would end up in 3♠. If the field wasn't in 3 that would likely be because they didnt open the bidding.
I would like to attend this coming Friday's session but I am currently scheduled to attend my first F2F Regional in over 2+ years. So any chance you could post the .pbn file. I'm think not because that is not possible on BBO? Or are you making the boards on Shark Bridge and importing them into BBO via a .lin file?

Do you discuss boards not in the video? If so... 3 how many diamonds should north bid over 1H? 7 Was 2H the right bid for North? I tend to think that 3H with 53 fit is against law, so I really don't want to do it (1* and then jumping). 11 (a) should East open the bidding? (b) defending 3S, how does North exit after winning partners club lead and why?
Board 3: I would typically overcall 3♦ with the north hand because I think thats what most people would do. You could argue for 4♦ as well at this vulnerability opposite a passed hand partner. Its a perfect hand to preempt on, so I would rule out 2♦. I think you will go down in 3 too often. If you had a doubleton then I'd feel like it was closer. Board 11: I think you're asking about the wrong hand.
Thank you so much for the game and video. I have a question about Board #2. If East had the same HCP and distribution 1444 the bidding would probably be the same? Not knowing the exact distribution, West might just pass 2NT?
When we reverse our first suit is always longer than our second suit. With 1-4-4-4 I would open 1♦ and rebid 2♣. If that ends the auction, so be it. If partner takes me back to 2♦, I will correct to 2♥ and have shown my entire hand.
The 4 boards you devised, and your discussion of them, was excellent (as always) and entertaining (as always). On Board 11, it seems that opener can describe 3 levels of strength for his opening bid after North bids 3S: 1) With slam going interest, bid (Serious) 3NT . 2) With no slam interest, but in the interest of being cooperative, make a control bid. 3) With a hand better suited to a junkyard than a bridge table, sign off at 4S. Am I correct?
1 and 3 are reasonable descriptions. I dont think #2 means "no slam interest", it just means they dont have a slam try of their own. Lots of hands can fit well for slam but not have enough beef themselves to be worth a slam try. They are a wide range. Anywhere from a minimum with 2 keycards and the queen to some 14-16 point hands.
I liked the game and video very much. If we could earn master points, all the better! But I guess you can't when using prepared hands.
I am sure there is something we could do with ACBL hands. Common Game does analysis on their hands so I don't see why we wouldn't be allowed to do something like that. I wouldn't be able to prepare deals but I could still find important things from a set of boards to go over.
B 4. North doubles and south bids spades. Does a raise to 3S by North show 19+ ? North has to remember that South can have 0
Yes 3♠ shows 19-21 there. See Slide 31 from Power Doubles Part 1 That is a perfect bid for the north hand. South definitely has enough to bid game over 3♠. The 5th trump and 5 useful high cards are gold opposite a partner who basically bid 3♠ all by themselves.
