B2. over 1C (suit overcall) ? you say here to bid 2C only. However https://wolpertbridge.com/article/10242023-friday-game B4 (at 33' 40") you say 3C is a mixed raise after a suit overcall. Since here with no interference you would show a mixed raise, why not show it after the overcall. You play 1m (X) 3m rasie as mixed and I thought you played the same after a suit overcall. Thanks
Hi Gavin. Firstly, thanks again for the excellent commentary on these hands. I had a couple of stem questions and you mentioned on the zoom last week that it was better to ask those here so here goes. 1 - in your master series system, after 1NT - 2C (stayman) - 2D - what does 2H mean ? is it weak 5H and 4S or crawling or something else ? 2 - you mention that in your system, you use 1m-3m as constructive (7-9) rather than weak preemptive and use 1m-2m as inverted invitation + - what are your thoughts on using 3 bids to show weak or constructive or limit plus ? I've tried using 1C-2D or 1D-3C for the constructive bid and use 1m-3m as weaker and premptive - not come up much so not sure how effective it is so far - just an idea. Thanks again - Geoffrey
1. I am not sure what you call this, garbage or crawling or otherwise, but it's weak with both majors as you say. 2. They all make some sense as long as all the possible strengths are covered. Having a raise to 3 show a mixed raise is nice since it preempts them but you have a little something to help partner out.
Gavin: On Board 8, you said that if South didn't have a four card major, they would bid 4NT quantitative. I've had this situation come up before and bid 2S, which is essentially a quantitative ask in itself, but allows us to play 3NT if partner bids a negative 2NT rather than a positive 3C. Is there some value to bidding 4NT rather than using the 2S route? Does partner evaluate differently knowing it is quantitative for slam rather than thinking (wrongly) it is quantitative for game? And would it be different NV compared to V where the IMP equity for game is different than slam?
It's a good question, and any difference is fairly subtle. But yes, evaluating for game is different than evaluating for slam. For example, weakish holdings like Jx or Qx improve more when partner is stronger, since more likely partner has matching honor cards in those suits.
