Gavin mentioned he did not play equal level conversion doubles. I have been playing them. What is the downside/alternative? His comment was made during discussion of hand 5.

The downside is if you have a good hand with the equal level suit, you can't conveniently double and bid the suit to show your strength. There is also a chance in a competitive auction of partner bidding too much in your short suit before you have gotten across the full message of your hand type.
