Hi Gavin - a couple of things on board 1 - you mention that jumping to 3NT over 2S would show extra values - I thought that was the right bid for that reason but maybe I’ve missed-interpreted how many extra values you meant in the lesson you referenced. What more would south be showing by a jump to 3NT in this spot ? Secondly over 2NT, should North always pattern out with a 5-4-3-1 shape as here in case partner wants to know the exact shape for possible slam ambitions or here would you only pattern out with 3 hearts and a singleton club as clearly partner might want to know if you have 3 hearts. I guess if you have the agreement to always pattern out, then raising to 3NT would show 5-4-2-2 shape right ?
Over 2NT, for sure opener should pattern out. Make a habit of describing your hand as well as you can in strong auctions. There is no real harm and it helps you reach the best contract, which is not always 3NT. The first part I can't really answer better than Gavin did.
My question is that if the opener has 16-17 points and four spades, he does not have a reverse bid if 2S meant to be as jump shift. How would he bid to show 4 spades and 16-17 points? If we use 3S as game forcing jump shift, there is no bidding room problem as responder can bid game with a fit or 3N with no fit. 3S as splinter is not that useful if no slam is interested.
Rebid 1♠, then if responder attempts to sign off, opener takes a third natural bid to show a little less than a jump shift.
For hand 1, should I use 2S as reverse to show 17-21 and 3S to game force jump shift 19-21 instead of splinter for H suit. The problem with 2S as jump shift is that 1S range is too wide like 12-18 and responder will have a hard time to figure out where to go. If we play Leb, the responder need to know that the opener has a reverse hand.
Using 3♠ as natural would waste far too much bidding room. As a splinter it's ok since the fit is already established, but you need more room when you are still looking for a fit.
