B2 I was West. At my table the auction went 1NT-(p)-2♦-(2♠)-p-(p). What is 3♥ by West? Game invitation or just to compete?
Just to compete. North doubles to show values when they have game interest. I just did a lesson on this called "more NT interference".
B1 North opens with 15HCP. South has 13HCP. No fit in any suit, all they know is they should be in game and close out in 3NT when slam is possible. Who and how should they investigate slam? In general, how does responder show a stronger hand beyond game forcing? Maybe slam in a minor? Let's say South had AK of ♣ Would you go beyond 3N to explore slam?
When you have slams with 16 HCP facing 16 HCP, they are very difficult to bid. Usually getting to slam requires one hand having more like 18-19 so they can invite slam. When you have a fit its easier because you can establish the fit and then use control bidding. My auction would have gone exactly the same if south had ♣AK. We may miss a slam but I am just as worried about pushing for slam and going down. I dont feel the need to bid every slam. I am happy with plus scores.
board 6 - you said partner promised an opening hand when they came in over 1NT. Not sure I understand why. Are you suggesting all immediate calls show opening values and delayed calls are weaker?
I play (and teach) that the direct seat overcalls / doubles show a hand that I would have opened. That doesnt mean it promises 12 points, but it shows at least a rule of 20 hand (4-6 + 10 points, or 4-5 11 points). This is true for me in the direct seat, (RHO opened 1NT), but I am willing to balance with almost anything.
board 1 - in UK the 2D bid is often called 'third suit forcing' (Andrew Robson). I alerted as third suit forcing. I explained may (not) be short by mistake! Started to type may not be a real suit! Hopefully opponents got the idea. Slightly different treatment in the UK but agreement is the key in everything and the principle is similar.
brd 5 - south has 5 hcp and 1 trump. I chose to pass. You said I must bid 1NT. If north has 19 hcp, expecting south to have 6+, going to 3nt is risky. Clarify
I did clarify in the video. "You might make a grand slam". We are all taught not to respond with fewer than 6 points , but the reality is on these distributional hands you need to respond to try to improve the contract. You can easily have a game if you have a heart fit or club fit. Youre right that 3NT doesnt rate to be making.
brd 2 - you said East should open 1NT. I thought that with 2 doubletons, I should open 1c/1d. Clarify.
