Thank you, Gavin. Very instructive deal. I went back and found the hand on IntoBridge, and checked the results -- I went down on this hand, and so did every single one of my friends who are intermediate and intermediate+. Clearly, counting tricks alone wont do it, we need to plan the actual order in which we go about accumulating the tricks.

I got it right, but was constantly worried that a 5-2 split in any of the (non-trump) suits would sink me. But I guess there's no real way to guard against it? Maybe I'm playing too many Bridge Master deals. =)
