Curious. In your 3rd and low lesson at the 21' mark you say to lead the T from T932. However in the game B2 you say to lead the 5 of clubs. Not sure now what to do? Did you change your mind since 2020?
You could lead either T or low from T9xx. It depends on the auction and even then can be a bit of a guess. Neither choice is wrong.
On Board 9, after (Pass) 1S (2S) can West bid 4C as a splinter? Do you play splinters on in this auction? I would think a heart splinter (the known major) would be on, but what about the unknown minor in a Michaels auction? If the splinter is on, I assume it is wide range, not showing a strong splinter, because 3NT would have to be natural here, not a weak splinter. Is that right?
I play fit jumps after michaels. I find them to be much more useful. I have a general rule: We can only splinter in the opponent's known suits in competition. This is my personal rule in my partnerhsips and not neccesarily a standard one. If you dont have that rule this would be a decent hand to splinter and yes we wouldn't play two tiered splinters, so it would be back to a standard game forcing splinter.
Board 3. What is your preferred fsf style? 1s or 2s Which do you and Warren play?
Warren and I play a homegrown method after 1♣-1♦-1♥. We play that 1♠ is either weak (5-8) or Game Forcing anywhere. We play that bidding 1NT, 2♣, 2♦ or 2♥ directly over 1♣-1♦-1♥ all show 9-11 points. With game forcing hands we have two ways to bid. We play jumping to 2♠ directly shows a heart fit and a game force and all other game forces start by bidding 1♠ and then bid 2♥ or higher on our next turn, with 2♥ being an artificial game force. Its quite complicated and possibly not worth it but I invented it a while ago with Vince and so I'm partial to it. I would just play 1♠ is fourth suit forcing when playing Walsh Style with a new partner.
Hi Gavin, on board #10, why wouldn't East show its four card spade suit rather than three card diamond suit on its second bid? Thanks. Gwen
2♠ would be a reverse, forcing partner to the 3 level, showing 17+ points. East has a minimum hand and aren't strong enough to force to the 3 level.
Hi Gavin, In the review of Hand 8, South rebid 2 spades (51.18 on the replay). You said it was to try to get P to bid 2 NT with a stopper. Does South's 2 spade rebid show a spade stopper (QJ?) or is he asking P to bid NT with a spade stopper? Thanks- really enjoying the replay of the Post Mortem!!!
No 2♠ doesnt show anything about spades. It is just a forcing bid. South has a hand thats worth more than just returning to 3♣, so they use 2♠ to show partner something extra. South is hoping to find a spade stopper in partner's hand.
Hi Gavin, If the opps open 3 clubs and you are in the next seat, how many points should you have to overcall Michael's (4c)? Thanks!
I don't really think in terms of points in this spot. If I am strong enough to overcall at the 3 level, I would typically bite the bullet and bid Michaels rather than guess which major to overcall. It would depend am I 6-5? I would say the minimum would be some 5-5 opening hand.
gavin, hi ! board 7 : p - (1d) - dbl - (2s) - p - (p) - 2nt -(p) are systems on as when partner opens 2n ?
